For the second in my series on friends who run businesses worthy of everyone knowing about, let me introduce you to Jane and Rohana, the creative forces behind Tamarillo UV Swimwear, a new concept in chic, stylish UV protection clothing for in and out of the water. Jane and Rohana, from UK and NZ/Canada respectively, live on the Côte d’Azur and I recently had the pleasure of chatting to them about their business.
When did you create your company and why?
Tamarillo was launched in May 2013 after about 6 months of discussions, drawings and prototypes were finally boiled down to something we could work with. We decided on UV swimwear because we saw that there was a limited supply of styles and colours available in a growing market. We were always focussing more on Asian and Australian markets where the product is already in regular use by all age groups, whilst hoping for an increase in European sales. Aiming to be of the highest quality and with a different look to what is already out there – less sporty more ‘casual chic’ – we have a product range which is ingrained with the colours and classic chic of the region, with which we hope we inspire people to keep safe in the sun. Growing awareness of the dangers of UV exposure should expand this market and incredible quality technical fabrics make protection much more comfortable and the swimwear much more wearable – in or out of the water.
Tell me a bit about yourselves and your product
We are two mums who were tired of the endless use of sunscreen and fed up with having to cajole our kids into pulling a rash vest over their heads! The possibility to have zippered shirts with long or short sleeves which could be worn wet or dry so you and your family can be stylish and safe inspired us. Our pieces are made from the highest quality Italian UPF50+ fabric which is chlorine resistant.
What’s your most popular item?
Our most popular item is a unisex short sleeve front zippered shirt in petrol blue. Our favourite however is our maternity shirt. It’s so hard to look and feel fantastic on the beach at the best of times and if you’re expecting, your skin can be super sensitive to the sun or you might feel more modest. We wanted to pamper and protect your precious bump and create a perfect silhouette to flatter throughout the entire pregnancy.
How’s it going so far? Any “bragging” rights?
We’re delighted to say that in our first year of business we’ve been featured in British Vogue, Tatler and Glamour and have procured a contract with North Island Resort in the Seychelles. This “A-lister” resort (where Prince William and Kate honeymooned) now stocks North Island branded Tamarillo shirts.
How can my readers buy your beautiful products?
You can buy online at www.tamarillo.co and we ship for free anywhere in the world. We also keep stock here in the south of France and would be very happy to deliver locally (Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Grasse area). We are happy to give your clients a 20% discount using the code LOUMESSUGO20
