Every year in early autumn in the Alps animals that have spent the summer grazing in high pastures are brought down to the valleys for the winter.  This movement of livestock is called transhumance and in many villages it's the perfect opportunity to get together and celebrate; a great excuse for a fête.  A couple of weeks ago, with a less than inspiring weather forecast and only a few hours available, we decided on the spur of the moment to go and experience a transhumance for ourselves in a gorgeous little hill-top village.

What is a bûche de Noël?

Posted by on in French Culture & Traditions

The Christmas meal in France, eaten on the evening of the 24th of December, wouldn’t be complete if it didn’t end with a delicious dessert of bûche de Noël, but what exactly is a bûche de Noël?  Literally translated bûche de Noël means Christmas log, and nowadays it comes in the form of a cake shaped more or less like a log.  Its origins however come from a real wooden log.bûche noël esther

January is the month of la galette in France.  La galette des rois, or King's Cake, a flaky buttery pastry filled with almond paste, is traditionally eaten at Epiphany on 6th January, but in reality it's eaten throughout the month at social gatherings, schools, offices, New Year ceremonies and so on. As today is Epiphany I thought I'd share with you just how easy it is to make your own galette des rois.  For details on the traditions that surround the eating of the cake take a look at this post I wrote a while back.
